BEST PRINTER SETTINGS
FOR PLAYABLE RECORDS
A record is a surface-finish problem disguised as a print. These are the settings that actually change whether the groove tracks — and the ones that don't matter at all.
The rule
Everything you tune is in service of one thing: a clean, consistent groove wall. Speed and layer height dominate. Temperature and cooling matter next. Infill, brims and retraction barely register — do not spend a weekend on them.

- Top surface: 100% solid, 4+ top layers, ironing OFF — ironing smears the groove shut.
- Cooling at 100% from layer two so the groove wall freezes before it slumps.
- PLA at the low end of its temperature range (usually 195–205°C) for crisper edges.
- Infill 20–30% with a rigid pattern; the disc only needs flatness and mass.
- No supports, no brim on the groove face; print flat with grooves facing up.
- Level the bed carefully — a 0.1mm tilt across 120mm is audible as a once-per-revolution thump.

- Run an exposure test first — overexposure thickens the groove wall and closes the gap.
- Print flat on the plate rather than angled; angling stair-steps the groove.
- Slow lift speeds reduce suction forces that distort a wide flat disc.
- Use a tough or ABS-like resin; standard brittle resin chips at the groove edge.
- Wash thoroughly — uncured resin in the groove sets into permanent surface noise.
- Cure the disc flat and weighted so it does not bow while it hardens.
COMMON QUESTIONS
What layer height should I use for a 3D-printed record?
0.08mm is the practical floor on FDM and the usual sweet spot. Resin printers should run 0.03–0.05mm. Anything coarser turns the groove wall into audible stair-stepping.
Do I need supports when printing a record?
No. The disc prints flat on the plate with the grooves facing up. Supports would touch the groove face and ruin it.
Why does my printed record skip?
Usually warping, a blocked groove entry, or groove pitch too tight for the printer's resolution. Check flatness first, then widen the pitch and reprint a short test.
Does infill matter for records?
Only for flatness and mass. Use 20–30% with a solid top so the groove surface is fully dense; a heavier disc also tracks more stably on the platter.
